Made with plant matter, these certified compostable bags break down into organic matter and make a yummy meal for microorganisms.

They’re also BPI Certified for industrial composting (ASTM D6400) and can be placed in most municipal compost programs. While they don’t have a US-specific home composting certification, they do have a European one (TUV OK Compost Home). So we think there’s a pretty good chance they’ll break down in your garden heap — whether you live in California or Cannes.

How often should I change the bag?

Every three days or so. While these compost bags are suuuper strong, they will start breaking down when exposed to moisture and heat. Changing the bag twice a week helps to keep your compost bin fresh and dry.

How long will it take to break down?

It depends on where the bag ends up. In an industrial composting facility, biodegradation only takes about 3 months because the conditions are controlled, consistent and (feelin’) hot hot hot! Your household compost is cooler and more variable, so it will take about 12 months. (Think cozy blanket versus steamy sauna.)

Can I use these compost bags for trash going to the landfill too?

Please don’t! Since landfills are designed to prevent biodegradation, research shows that recycled plastic can actually have a lower global warming footprint in these conditions. (That’s because they don’t break down anaerobically, which helps reduce methane emissions). Recycled plastic also has the least impact in terms of sourcing.

Why should I compost?

Over 1 billion (with a b!) metric tons of food is wasted every year and a lot of that ends up in landfills. It’s terribly wasteful, and it’s also terrible for the environment — 8% of greenhouse gas emissions come from food waste alone. But composting can help make a difference. And these bags? Well, they make it easy to transfer scraps from your countertop to the bin without the ick. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
